Class Reflection Blog Post

This class was one that included some valuable information, but also included a lot of content that I felt could have been replaced with something a bit more relevant and challenging for a 400-level elective class.

This class did provide a basic introduction to marketing through social media outlets and provided tips that would have been helpful to those new to marketing on social media platforms, such as how to properly promote a brand through different social media outlets and utilizing the features of each to be able to successfully operate a campaign. If a student had never been introduced at all to social media marketing, this course would have been more valuable to them. Unfortunately, I am not that student.

I have been introduced to social media, search engine optimization, and online marketing many times before, and much of this content was somewhat basic to me, and I didn't feel as though I was introduced to many new concepts that I wasn't already aware of. Taking a 400-level class, I expected more in-depth Internet marketing information rather than being taught the features of each social media platform and the basics on how to use them, which is something more suited for a

One aspect I did enjoy was the team project at the end of the class. I enjoyed using my abilities to assist with a real campaign for a real entity, and I felt as though that was something that could apply to a career in the future.

I was not a big fan of the weekly blog posts, not so much because of the blogging itself, but because it was arranged in an odd manner. We were encouraged to start a blog about anything we wanted, but were then given prompts to respond to that really didn't relate to many of our blog topics. I feel as though many blogs seemed to lack a concise purpose because they were fun posts about various topics, but then had to be mixed with blog assignments that didn't always relate to the rest of the content. I like the idea of blogging, but perhaps it could be done in a more effective manner.

Overall, I found this class to be a good refresher course on the basics of social media marketing and Internet promotion, and I did enjoy the final project, but I did feel as though the class could have used some more in-depth, higher level thinking on the ideas behind social media marketing.

Art & Copy Project Reflection

Art & Copy showed the creative side of the marketing world, and showed the imagination and innovation that goes behind a promotional campaign. I believe that marketers should look for more from their work than what is generally required to meet deadlines and focus solely on the financial side of the industry.

For my project, the film inspired me to think creatively and push myself to put more into the creativity and the thought process behind my process for NeverWake, the band my group is working for. The creative side of the marketing industry is what gives a campaign its backbone and allows it to thrive in the market, and I hope to use creative marketing to benefit NeverWake and put together a great campaign.

NeverWake Promotional Campaign

When introduced to NeverWake in a previous class, a professor called the music "BAD ASS ROCK," which is what I have chosen to use as my mock promotional campaign for the band.

Theme: BAD ASS ROCK
Description: The band already has a steady brand image, using promotional photos along with bright green fonts. To stay true to that, I have selected an image of the band that they use in their promotional package, and place the words "BAD ASS ROCK" across the bottom of the image in a bold, rough font. This is meant to stick to their established brand image, and giving them a level of intensity that their music requires.

MDIA 4902 - Team Project Blog Assignment

For the MDIA 4902 class, we have been put into teams and have been given the task of managing an entity's social media presence, whether it be an artist, a company, or another entity. My group has chosen to manage the social media presence of NeverWake, an Ohio-based rock band with an established social media presence.

For this week's blog assignment, we have been asked to write about what we have contributed to the project for the first week. Since our class period, I have been researching the band, listening to their music, browsing their social media profiles, and taking notes on the content on their pages and identifying areas in which we may be able to improve on their social media presence outside of what they are already doing. Once we all collaborate and piece together our research, we will have a much better understanding of where we will need to go from here with improving their social media marketing and their online presence.

MDIA 4902 - Blog Assignment #3 - Innovative Social Media Campaigns

Social media, once considered new technology in the world of marketing, now requires much more than ever before to engage an audience and connect them with a brand. In the past, a company could get by with just simply having a Facebook page or a Twitter profile, but today this is not the case. This post will highlight three innovative uses of social media and the ways in which companies and brands are using social media to market toward the general public.

1. Oreo's Brilliant Super Bowl Blackout Advertisement
Oreo was a big winner in the social media marketing efforts surrounding the Super Bowl, and accomplished it with little to no financial backing behind the campaign. During the Super Bowl blackout, when the power went out at the stadium, Oreo posted this on their Twitter page:

During an event where commercials are multi-million dollar efforts, Oreo managed to get themselves out there without the flashy, expensive advertising campaigns.

2. Red Bull's Felix Baumgartner Skydiving Stunt
Red Bull has been doing a great job at building their edgy brand image, and the highlight of their recent social media campaigns was the record breaking skydiving stunt performed by Felix Baumgartnet live on the Internet. My personal Facebook blew up with links to the stream, and the Internet went crazy over the stunt, and Red Bull's brand image was further solidified as the edgy energy drink brand they are looking to establish.

As you can see, the Red Bull logo is printed on the side of the diver's suit, and his parachute also featured a Red Bull design as he landed.

3. BOS Iced Tea Free Sample Twitter Campaign
This campaign is really interesting, and I think it's a really unique way to pass out free samples. BOS Iced Tea placed vending machines in public places, and a person was asked to tweet at the BOS Twitter profile in order to get the machine to dispense a sample. This not only distributes a free sample, but forces the consumer to interact with their Twitter page in order to get the sample.

With an innovative social media campaign, we can see that a company can build their brand and engage their audience, especially when done in a creative way that helps a company stand out in the sea of social media advertising.

Welcome!

Hello! This is my first post of many to come from a project in my MDIA 4902 class on Social Media and Marketing. My name is Kory Kasler, and I am a senior at Ohio University studying marketing and media management. Each week, our class will be asked to complete a blog post on our blog based on a prompt or a set of instructions distributed by our instructor. This week, my task is to introduce myself and get my blog up and running. Obviously, this blog is now up and running, so here's a little bit of information about me and a story of my own personal experience with social media marketing.

I am currently serving as the Promotions Director for ACRN, an online radio station based at Ohio University. I absolutely love everything about it. What I do for the station is organize and promote live events, help maintain the social media presence of the station, and promote the radio station as a whole.

This requires a lot of social media marketing work, as each live event must be promoted through social media, and the station has put a lot of work into maintaining its overall social media presence. My biggest accomplishment, and something that I am quite proud of, is that I kickstarted a social media campaign, along with the help of many station members and alumni, that resulted in the station receiving nationwide recognition from MTV's college themed network, mtvU, and got the station ranked among the top 10 student-run college stations in the United States in the mtvU Woodie Awards. It was incredible seeing a social media campaign come together, and we're currently conducting another campaign for this year's awards. If you could help us out, that would be great!
